Module summary

This module is designed to help support students in both considering undergraduate and graduate opportunities and also support them in their application preparation. This module will increase students’ awareness of their own skills/interests and personal characteristics, allowing them to highlight these in future applications.

Objectives

This course aims to provide a framework within which students will be able to maximise the academic career and personal development opportunities available to them whilst studying at the School of Food Science and Nutrition.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course students will have:
1. Explored their future career/ life plans
2. Increased their awareness of their skills, interests and personal characteristics
3. A greater awareness of the opportunities for skills development at the University of Leeds and how to make the most of them to develop their skills profile
4. Explored which employers they many like to work or study with in the future
5. An understanding of the range of opportunities to gain work experience whilst they are a student and how and when to apply for them
6. Developed a CV and Covering Letter
7. Developed practical techniques for interviews, presentations, group work and networking
8. Increased their enterprising skills
9. An increased understanding of the range of ways in which the Careers Centre can help them in your career planning and development at all stages in their degree programme
10. Developed a careers action plan


Syllabus

This module aims to help students develop realistic career plans to work towards during their time at university and beyond.
Throughout the module we will use workshops and practical exercises to consider:
- the factors affecting decision making and how these relate to career planning;
- the current employment market for graduates in general, and for Food Science and Nutrition graduates in particular;
- what skills employers are looking for, with particular reference to subject-specific occupations;
- recruitment and selection processes;
- how to develop relevant skills through your degree programme and other activities at university;
- how understanding yourself and what motivates you can help in career choice;
- how to make the most of any vacation or temporary work experience;
- issues of self presentation, both oral and written.

Private study

Private study time will be split between the various tasks required:
Essay or volunteering with reflective log 25 hours
Preparation for presentation 10 hours
producinr Linkdin profile 5 hours
Completing workbook exercises 17 hours
Completion of CV 15 hours
Career plan 6 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be required to complete a workbook throughout the module and deadlines for certain pieces of work will be set throughout the duration. Students will be encouraged to make full use of the Careers Centre facilities to aide their progress during the course of the module. Any further issues would be addressed during the interactive workshop sessions.
