Module summary
This module features three canonical texts of nineteenth-century French literature. Thematically, each of the texts recounts the struggles of an ambitious outsider seeking to succeed in society: the protagonists of Le Rouge et le Noir and Le Père Goriot are young, impoverished, provincial men, seeking to establish themselves in Paris, while Emma Bovary longs to escape the confines of her dull provincial life, and is further excluded by her gender. These themes will be studied in conjunction with reflection on formal aspects of the novels, to explore the ways in which each of these texts raises subtle questions about the relationship between literature and 'reality'.Objectives
