Objectives
The term abroad will take one of two forms:- Study at partner institution
- Work placement
During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in French
- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of French culture
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the French culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the term, students should have:
- improved their language fluency and proficiency
- improved their knowledge and appreciation of the target culture
Skills outcomes
Students will have had the opportunity to develop and practise:
- interpersonal and transferable skills required to operate successfully in French society, in a variety of roles and situations
Syllabus
Term Abroad study at a partner institution involves attendance at a ten-week course at a French university language centre. The course combines classroom work and external visits and is intended to provide an opportunity to complete Level 2 language studies in a French context, while also experiencing some further aspects of French society and culture.
The Term Abroad work placement involves a placement of at least twelve weeks in duration. The content is to be agreed by arrangement with the student, Work Placement Tutor and the student's employer within the overall objectives outlined above.

Private study
Students will be expected to immerse themselves in the culture of the host country and undertake those activities necessary for successful completion of the term abroad. Regular homework tasks and continuous assessment will be set by the partner institution.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will maintain contact with their personal tutors and/or residence abroad tutor by e-mail. Regular contact is maintained between the Department and the course co-ordinator at each partner institution who will send end of term reports on attendance, progress as well as exam results for each student. For work placements, the Work Placements Officer holds a meeting, normally by Skype or telephone, with the student and their supervisor.Methods of assessment
