Module summary

On completion of this module students will:- have been introduced concepts, theories and methods of earth observation from aircraft and earth orbital satellites for environmental research and for input into GIS;- be able to use appropriate software to read, display, restore, enhance, classify and extract information about the land surface from diverse types of remote sensing images.

Objectives

On completion of this module students will:
- have been introduced concepts, theories and methods of earth observation from aircraft and earth orbital satellites for environmental research and for input into geographical information systems;
- understand the concepts, theories, methods and use of digital image processing of earth observation images for environmental research;
- be able to usea market leader in Remote Sensing software to read, display, restore, enhance, classify and extract information about the land surface from diverse types of remote sensing images for studying soils, crops, grasslands, ecology, forests, hydrological and ecological processes, urban environments and environmental change;
- have an understanding of the rich scientific literature on earth observation, image processing of earth observation images and use of the resulting processed data in environmental research, physical geography and geographical information systems.

Learning outcomes
The design and content of the module assumes:
- that students have little or no prior knowledge or experience of remote sensing, earth observation or digital image processing;
- that if students have prior knowledge, they should be able to develop their understanding of principles and applications of earth observation and digital image processing further during this module;
- that the focus will be on concepts, principles and methods of digital image processing for earth observation of the land surface and its resources;
- that students will be Introduced to the scientific literature on digital image processing for environmental research with the aid of earth observation and GIS.

Skills outcomes
Students will acquire skills and experience in the following:
(i) interpreting earth observation images of the earth's surface;
(ii) understanding digital images, formats, scales, header files, sources, types and other characteristics;
(iii) using Leica's ERDAS Imagine software application for digital image processing of earth observation images, digital maps and other images;
(iv) knowledge and skills in understanding and applying various algorithms for performing functions on digital images and assessing and comparing results with similar results published in the scientific literature.

- Introduction to earth observation and digital image processing for environmental research, Introduction to electromagnetic radiation and the spectrum.
- Principals of energy interactions with the atmosphere.
- Principals of energy interactions with the Earth's surface.
- Principles of sensor technology.
- Principals of major remote sensing systems.
- Introduction to image pre-processing-radiometric calibration.
- Further image pre-processing-atmospheric corrections and filtering.
- Principles of estimating Earth surface properties with remote sensing - image ratios.
- Principles and methods of image classification for environmental remote sensing.
- Land cover classification and accuracy assessment.
- Review of environmental research using remote sensing and GIS.
