Module summary

This module aims to improve student skills in clinical communication and consultation skills. We explore the theories that surround the consultation and the internal and external factors that have an impact upon it.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will:
- understand what a primary care consultation is and be aware of different approaches to the consultation;;
- know about and understand a number of different models of the consultation and be able to compare the different models critically;
- have an appreciation of the key research that underpins current ideas about "good practice" in the consultation;
- have had the opportunity to observe and reflect upon their own consultations;
- have an understanding of complex consultations;
- have an understanding of clinical decision making and risk
- demonstrate an increased awareness of cues and 'micro-cues' and within the consultation

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- describe the primary care approach to the consultation
- critically appraise a variety of consultation models and describe how these can be implemented in practice
- discuss the role of the general practitioner in health promotion
- evaluate the challenges of providing a personalised service whilst meeting the needs of the wider patient population
- ciritally analyse their own consultation skills and provide constructive feedback to peers
- implement a creative approach to the consultation

Syllabus

- What is a primary care consultation? The nature of consultations in primary care, different approaches and differences in consulting styles and content between the different professions.
- Models of the consultation
-Spotting cues, ‘microcues’ and skills
- 'Medical Improv’ – ways of improving responsiveness, mindfulness and flexibility and introducing creativity into the consultation.
- Processes within the consultation; listening and responding to patient cues, decision making, risk communication
- Complex consultations
- Patient perspectives at the consultation
- Reflecting on consultations performed by students in practice
- External challenges that may influence the consultation

Private study

79 hours of private study including video recording of consultations which are taking place whilst on placement (under clinical supervision). Students will also need to spend time reviewing those consultations before the relevant teaching session and undertake the recommended reading.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be given the opportunity to hand in a draft outline of their assignment, no later than 2 weeks before the deadline. Feedback will be returned by the module leader. Formative feedback on consultation style and technique will be given by the module tutors and peers during sessions 5 & 6. This will be done in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Peer feedback will take place on the student’s chosen video during one of the teaching sessions. Each student will be given a proforma to complete for each one of their peers.
