Objectives

By the end of the module students will be able to carry out a piece of empirical research in a clinical practice environment, addressing a research question relevant to their area of clinical practice.

Learning outcomes
1. Critical evaluation of relevant literature related to specific research question developed from the clinical practice environment.
2. Demonstrate ability to critique and evaluate different research methods that could be used to address a specific research question.
3. The ability to plan and conduct a substantial clinically focused empirical research study, providing an evaluation and justification of the approaches taken.
4. Carry out appropriate analysis of data collected, discussing strengths and limitations of the approaches used.
5. Demonstrate the ability to provide a written report of the research undertaken, providing a critical evaluation of the implications of the findings for clinical practice.
6. Generate a dissemination and implementation plan that will enhance practice.

Syllabus

This module will enable students to formulate and operationalise a clear research question that is relevant to the clinical practice environment and appropriate for investigation using primary data collection. They will then be required to carry out a piece of empirical clinical research, under academic supervision.

Seminar discussions will include discussion of issues surrounding the design and management of clinical research, including considerations such as Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in research, negotiating the research ethics and governance processes and how to ensure that research results are implemented in practice settings (Impact).

Students will be encouraged and supported by academic supervisors who have experience in the subject speciality or research methods being used as appropriate. Students will normally have, two academic supervisors; one supervisor may be located in practice.

This dissertation will build upon student's prior learning and enable them to provide an in-depth critical and reflective account drawing on appropriate underpinning theoretical literature. Such literature will be used to support the methodology adopted and methods operationalised to explain the clinical issue and to explain the implications of the student's findings. Information will be presented in a format suitable for dissemination.
