Module summary

This module forms a core component for the MSc in Clinical Research Methods programme.The aim of the module is to provide students with an opportunity to develop research management knowledge and skills for clinical research.

Objectives

Module objectives are to enable students to apply knowledge in the context of real-world clinical research:
Demonstrate understanding of project management for clinical research
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and critical insights relating to project management techniques
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of collaborative research teams
Demonstrate effective communication of research to different audiences
Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the NHS governance and ethical approval systems

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of project management for clinical research from the start of the research to dissemination
2. Critically evaluate application of project management techniques for clinical research
3. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge, understanding and the need for collaborative researchers i.e. the roles of research collaborators
4. Demonstrate effective communication skills to different audiences.
5. Exhibit in-depth understanding of the NHS governance and ethical approval systems

Syllabus

Knowledge, theories and practical examples will be provided to enable students explore real-world clinical research:
Project management principles for clinical research from the start of research to dissemination
Project management techniques, such as Gantt charts; miles stones; risk mitigation and prioritising work-flow.
Examples of collaborative research i.e. the roles of research collaborators
Prioritising financial planning e.g. staff, technical equipment; data collection tools; travel and dissemination costs
Effective communication techniques to different audiences e.g. service users and carers, clinicians, private sector and industry, NHS managers, external funding bodies
NHS research and development governance frameworks
NHS ethical approval systems
Good clinical practice on-line learning

Private study

Private study will include reflecting on learning; reading associated literature regarding research management and management tools; preparing for the group tutorials and preparing for the assignment.
Independent e-learning: the Good Clinical Practice (GCP) e-learning course provides an introduction to good clinical research practice, EU Directives, UK regulations and research governance framework requirements covering clinical trials and other NIHR Portfolio studies conducted within the NHS. The e-learning has a practical focus. The key aim is for participants to know what to do to practise excellent GCP when they return to their workplace to ensure the rights, safety and wellbeing of patients, and the quality of the research data.
The cost of the e-learning will be met by the funds awarded for the programme.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored by the module leader and by self-assessment during tutorial discussion.
Peer support will be encouraged; the trend is for student to use social media to communicate and support learning.
Formative feedback will be provided on a plan for the verbal presentation.
Personal tutoring will be available to all students

In order to complete the module students must provide evidence of the satisfactory completion of the GCP Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course no more than two years before the submission date for the Research Protocol.
