Module summary
This module examines the consequences for the Crusading movement of the fall of Jerusalem to the Muslims in 1187, the various attempts to recover Jerusalem and the Holy Land, either directly or indirectly (through Egypt) until the Holy City's eventual recovery through diplomacy in 1229. But it also examines the expansion of the Crusading idea during these years in Spain and the Baltic (this was a crucial period for the development of the Crusade in both these regions), and in Crusades against heretics and political opponents of the papacy, and how such developments were envisaged and justified. A close examination of relevant primary sources will be an integral part of the module. There will be opportunities to develop aspects of this module for dissertations as part of the MA.Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to:(1) understand the significance of the Crusade in medieval society
(2) understand the interaction between different concepts of the Crusade
(3) understand the interaction between different geographical areas of Latin Christendom
(4) develop skills of analysis and comparative evaluation of a diverse range of contemporary narrative sources.
