Module summary
This module examines the control of development (in England and Wales) through the town and country planning system. The regulation of land use is permit-based (ie planning permission is required to authorise development). Issues covered include: the framework of planning law, development planning, decision-making (especially the significance of 'material considerations'), planning conditions, planning obligations and the Community Infrastructure Levy. The module is taught by reference to real life planning cases.This module is taught by lectures and seminars in semester 2. Assessment is by one 3,000 word essay.Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how the law in England and Wales is used to control development of the built and natural environment.Syllabus
TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING:
(a) The process of obtaining a planning permit (planning permission),
(b) The definition of 'development',
(c) Development plannings,
(d) Planning conditions, planning obligations and the Community Infrastructure Levy,
(e) Enforcement of planning control.
The module uses real life cases to illustrate the issues which include the impact of planning law and planning policy upon sites of significant nature conservation importance.
