This module is approved as a discovery module

Module summary

This module aims to introduce students to generative syntax, focusing on the Government and Binding model. The approach is empirical: on the basis of observation of the data (essentially from English), generalisations are made which are then explained by abstract rules governing human language.

Objectives

To provide an introduction to Noam Chomsky's influential theory of syntax, Principles and Parameters (or Government and Binding).

Syllabus

Theories of biologically innate genes for grammar; the design of language; syntax and the lexicon; individual modules of the grammar (Case, Theta Theory, Binding, etc.).
