Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- locate information on language-related topics and research papers/articles in the subject area of linguistics;
- recognise what constitutes an appropriate writing style in the main sub-disciplines of linguistics, and use this in their own work;
- represent linguistic data and refer to secondary sources according to current conventions in the subject area of linguistics;
- recognise that research can be approached in different ways, but that it should be reliable and informed by concrete research questions;
-understand ethical considerations inherent in linguistic research;
- critically evaluate research papers/articles on language-related topics.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students should be in command of core skills in linguistic research, including finding, analysing and reporting linguistic data; interpreting and critically evaluating research papers/articles on language-related topics; and understanding how to start planning an original research project.


Syllabus

The topics to be covered include:
- the nature of linguistic research;
- the roles and responsibilities of researchers in language studies;
- skills in locating linguistic data and secondary sources;
- skills in reading and writing research reports in linguistics
- skills in critically evaluating previous research findings;
- skills in the formulation of research questions in linguistics.
