Objectives

The objective of this module is to introduce students to the conceptual framework and methodology of financial and business analysis.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Access and utilise company and industry strategic, financial and stock market information from a variety of hard copy and computerised data sources;
- Research and analyse UK listed companies’ strategic, accounting and stock market performance.


Syllabus

Indicative syllabus includes:
- Introduction to financial and business analysis
- Accessing company and industry information
- Assessing strategic direction
- Overview of financial statements
- Techniques of financial analysis: cross sectional and time series analysis
- Stock market performance: assessing share price movements and market indicators

Private study

The central activity for the module will be the preparation a substantial applied research report. Students will therefore be required to conduct their own independent research in relation to a specific company to provide a real world context for their studies. Students will also be required to undertake specified pre-reading and question preparation in advance of the tutorial sessions based on the theoretical and analytical methods introduced in the lectures.

Formative feedback is provided throughout the module via feedback on progress to date and model answers to tutorial exercises and activities
