Objectives
On completion of this module, students should have a good grounding in comparative systems methodology; a clear understanding of the information and incentives features of market and planned systems and their relationship with firm objectives; a clear understanding of the main theoretical and empirical issues relating to the relationships between firm ownership, governance and efficiency; a good knowledge of the main models of the investor-owned firm, the state-owned firm and the labour-managed firm; a basic understanding of the privatisation and transition debates; and a capacity to start conducting research in the area of Comparative Economic Systems.Syllabus
Introduction: Society's goals, systems and organizational diversity. The investor-owned firm in market economies. Motivation, incentives, productivity and welfare. Labour-managed firm. Public and private ownership in market economies. Public ownership and administration: central planning. Privatisation. Nonprofits and the privatisation of public services.
