Objectives

The aim of this module is to examine theories of change and development as they apply to organisations, groups and individuals. It examines different theoretical perspectives and approaches that can be applied to the diagnosis and solving of problems in organisations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to critically assess:
- major concepts, theories, frameworks and tools for analysing the need for change and designing interventions
- potential negative human costs of change and ways in which to minimise these costs
- methodological issues, concepts and theories about stability in organisations

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Subject specific skills
- evaluate and debate theories and received opinion on organisational development and change
- apply theories, concepts and frameworks to diagnose the need for change and design interventions that will move organisations to a more effective state
- formulate communications regarding change in language that will be accessible to those involved in the change process

Transferable skills
- synthesise ideas and develop models to facilitate understanding, planning and action


Syllabus

The module covers core topics within the discipline of change management, including: patterns of change and their implications for change agents; power, politics and stakeholder management; strategies for change; and reviewing and sustaining change.

Private study

Reading and preparation for lectures, seminars and the examination (to include a mix of independent online learning and private study):
- 3 hours reading per lecture (3x10=30)
- 3 hours reading/practical preparation per seminar (3x10=30)
- 60 hours for examination revision.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Module tutors will offer students formative feedback on group activities and exercises undertaken in seminars.
- Students will also be encouraged to write a practise essay in preparation for the examination, on which feedback will be provided.
- Summative feedback will take the form of a final examination grade.
