Module summary

A systems perspective will underpin the focus on key resources such as data, information, knowledge, materials, staff, technology and facilities. The module will show you how business processes and capabilities can be aligned to meet the needs of key stakeholders, e.g. customers. How this is achieved in practice, via strategic analysis, design, implementation and management, will be discussed. Complementary themes will be pursued such as how to manage ongoing operations vs how to innovate and change existing operations. The role of technology, especially information and communications technology, in enabling innovation and improvement will be a key theme of the module.This module is core for the Full Time MBA.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and tools to enable them to explore how organizations, from individual firms to global networks, innovate, design, implement, manage and improve their operations and information systems. Students will learn how business processes and capabilities can be aligned to meet the needs of key stakeholders and how this is achieved in practice.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to critically assess:
- the systems viewpoint to organizations
- the nature and practice of operations management and information management from an individual organization to a global network
- how operations and information systems contribute to determining organizational performance
- the contribution of operations and information systems to determining and achieving corporate and business strategies
- how the key issues of innovation, improvement, sustainability and change impact on operations management and information management

Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:

Private study

Students are expected to spend their private study undertaking activities such as preparing for lectures and seminars; and preparing for assessment. This will include activities such as completing assigned reading including text books, case studies, and other material available on-line.
The time allocation is approximately:
- 40 hours: 4 hours reading per lecture
- 30 hours: 3 hours reading per seminar
- 15 hours: preparation for assignment (another 30hrs in groups)
