Objectives

This module aims to develop the knowledge, research skills and understanding to better enable participants to undertake a rigorous business project. Candidates should identify, define, scope and address a management or business issue worthy of primary and secondary research. The project should demonstrate an analytical approach to problem definition, skill in developing and implementing an appropriate methodology to gather, analyse and interpret relevant data; knowledge of relevant management or business theory and the ability to apply it appropriately; and the ability to write up and present the project report in a way that combines academic depth with an appreciation of relevant practical and business or management issues.

Knowledge outcomes:

On completion of this module participants will be able to:
a) develop a suitable research question and research objectives
b) demonstrate a critical awareness of alternative research methods when addressing a research question
c) design a research-evidenced business project and write a research-evidenced project proposal
d) identify and critically evaluate relevant literature to address a research question
e) choose appropriate data collection methods
f) choose appropriate data analysis methods
g) evaluate research strategies, data collection methods and data analysis methods in the context of a particular project.

Private study

Pre-work is sent out to students in advance of the first workshop. This involves advance reading and completion of short questionnaires and case material. A major component of the student’s time will be devoted to identifying their research topic, discussing it with others, designing the study, undertaking the research, analysing data, and writing it up. Approximately 158 hours will comprise of fieldwork (researching projects within their respective organisations).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The project proposal is assessed and written feedback provided to the student toward the end of the second semester. During the later phase of the module, typically across the summer months, the student receives guidance from the supervisor in supervisory sessions and specific feedback is provided on written work submitted by the student in advance of supervision meetings.
