Pre-requisite qualifications

This module is currently only available to Level 3 undergraduates registered on Microbiology, Biological Sciences and Genetics degree programmes. However Genetics students must have an appropriate background in Microbiology / Virology and obtain the approval of the Genetics and Microbiology Programme leaders.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

This module provides state of the art research led teaching. Students are recommended to attend five advanced topics.

Students will have knowledge of a range of Microbiology topics at the forefront of research within the School.

Syllabus

The module will comprise a series of advanced topics from which students will be required to choose five topics. The topics presented will reflect current developments across microbiology and exploit the current collective expertise of the School's academic and research staff.

In each topic lecturers will present current thinking and research findings, referring students to the research literature. Students will be required to read the up-to-date research literature to advance their knowledge beyond the material presented in the lectures.

Topics will be presented to cover all specialisms covered by the individual degree programmes.

Private study

Private study will be devoted to preparation for lectures and producing good notes thereafter, and preparing for the end-of-semester examination.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student attendance at lectures will be monitored in line with standard faculty practice.

At level 3, and in light of the extensive reading around the topics that is required, continuous assessment will not be appropriate for most advanced topic modules.
