Pre-requisite qualifications
This module is open to students who are registered in MACITS-Bidi and PGDip CI – Bidi, whose native language is not English.This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
On completion of this module students should be able to- be enhanced in English as their B language;
- apply advanced concentration, analysis and memory skills for assimilating information when working both from and into English;
- express the speaker's structure and intentions in a clear, natural and articulate way in the target language, including English.
- develop appropriate professional approaches to retour interpreting
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, it is expected that students will have become proficient in:
- presenting -in oral form- information, points of view and arguments they have just heard or prepared;
- conveying and interpreting information in clear, accurate and fully comprehensible English, using natural expression and appropriate register.
Skills outcomes
- Awareness of professional contexts and requirements of interpreters working with English as B language
- Ability to comprehend, analyse and present a message efficiently and professionally from and into English
- Ability to incorporate note-taking skills in interpreting from one’s native language into English
- Ability to reflect on one’s performances to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
- Independent learning and effective group work to facilitate progress in communication and interpreting skills using English
Syllabus
Commencing with an examination of the theoretical aspects of retour interpreting, the module will employ a broad range of authentic materials drawn from written/spoken media, interpreting contexts, official documents and various other sources, which will be used to train students in developing the skill of delivering clear, concise and meaningful renderings in English. Oral practice will include providing on the spot summaries of spoken and written language and presentations on a range of professional topics. Practical and critical feedback will be offered by native speakers of English, experienced tutors of English as B language, as well as by peers.

Private study
Students are expected to organise their private study efficiently and effectively, both as individuals and as a learning group. They are expected to increase their exposure to professional English usage by following authentic materials from written/oral sources. They will also practice key skills such as analysing information, synthesising different points of views, and making coherent and logical speeches/presentations/summaries. They will be given guidance for assessing their own performances and giving systematic and constructive feedback to peers.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The progress of professional competence will be monitored during the year through regular/oral feedback on student performances in classes.Summative assessment will be used to monitor students' progress:
Course work – one oral presentation per semester following module tutors' instructions
Exams - consecutive interpreting with note-taking from the student’s native language into English
Written summative feedback from module tutors will be provided for the assessments

At the end of each semester, students are required to sit an interpreting examination to demonstrate their skills in working with English as their retour language.
