Module summary

This module provides students with the opportunity to put into practice and demonstrate their research skills. With support from a supervisor, students will identify a topic related to the taught content of their programme of study, develop and refine research questions, identify and implement qualitative and / or quantitative methods appropriate to address these, and present their findings.

Objectives

To provide students with the opportunity to design and undertake a substantial research project from conception to completion.
To allow students to implement and demonstrate research skills, independent analysis and criticism.
To enable students to develop specialist knowledge in a key area of interest and relevance to their programme of study.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to demonstrate:
- ability to design, implement and complete a major independent research project informed by the taught content of their programme of study;
- ability to identify, articulate and refine their own research questions;
- critical understanding of key concepts and methodologies in current academic practice in the field and ability to select and apply them in ways appropriate to the project;
- ability to locate, analyse and interpret appropriate primary and secondary sources;
- ability to construct reasoned and well-supported arguments;
- ability to communicate effectively in a substantial piece of written work;
- ability to make effective use of academic supervision;
- good time management and IT skills.


Syllabus

The topic will be identified by the student and subject to approval by the module manager. The student will then pursue structured independent research with the guidance of a supervisor.

The student will pursue structured independent research on the chosen topic.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored during regular supervision meetings in advance of submission of the dissertation.
