Pre-requisite qualifications

- Good performance at Levels 1 & 2 (typically an average of 60).
- Acceptance by an appropriate partner institution

Students going to non-English-speaking destinations must demonstrate sufficient capacity in the language of instruction of the receiving institution and be linguistically competent to operate in the host country. Students going to European destinations, who have not already got an A-Level in the language of their host country, will be encouraged to take at least one foreign language elective at Leeds (if available). Students will also be encouraged to take a pre-sessional intensive language course in the host country.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:

- demonstrate their ability to cope with a significant change in their environment and adapt to a new culture;
- broaden their understanding and knowledge of their subject specialisms and acquire an alternative perspective on the study of that specialism in a different academic setting.
- gain a deeper understanding of the country in which they are studying;
- face the linguistic (where applicable), intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- develop transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the year abroad students should have provided evidence of having:
-improved their foreign language skills (in exchanges where the language is not English)
-gained a deeper understanding of the country and region (including history, economy, culture, and politics) in which they are studying;
- benefitted from academic study in an intellectual environment different from the 'home' environment;
- developed transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.
-Qualities and transferable skills necessary for working in another academic system and living in another country.
-Enhanced practical language skills, both written and oral, in some cases in a language other than English, as required by the demands of study in another country.
-self-reliance and adaptability in developing awareness and understanding of a culture and society other than their own and exercise personal responsibility and decision making

Syllabus

To be arranged with the host institution, in accordance with the SMLC Year Abroad Learning Contract and subject to the approval of the SMLC.

The study will normally comprise a combination of taught modules in the appropriate discipline and/or allied subject(s) chosen to complement the Leeds degree programme; up to 40% of the credits taken may relate to the culture or learning the language(s) of the host country.

To pass the year abroad, students will need to demonstrate all of the following:
- Minimum of 9 months residence abroad while studying
- Satisfactory attendance at university
- Satisfactory number of credits taken (typically equivalent to the load taken by a full-time student at the host institution)
- Completion of all modules taken (all forms of formative and summative assessment should be completed)
- Adequate number of modules passed (as agreed with the module leader and the host institution).

Private study

- Students will be expected to immerse themselves in the culture and learning context of the host country.
- This will involve engaging with the learning and teaching styles of the host institution, and operating as a local student.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The immediate level of monitoring will be undertaken by the host institution, using the methods employed for their own students.

At a more informal level, students will also be expected to maintain contact with their personal tutor and/or the year abroad tutor by regular email. In particular, students should inform the year abroad tutor of any problems or issues.
