Pre-requisite qualifications

- Good performance at Levels 1 & 2 (typically an average of 60).

Students going to non-English-speaking destinations must demonstrate sufficient capacity in the language of instruction of the receiving institution and be linguistically competent to operate in the host country. Students going to European destinations, who have not already got an A-Level in the language of their host country, will be encouraged to take at least one foreign language elective at Leeds (if available).

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:

- demonstrate their ability to cope with a significant change in their environment and adapt to a new culture;
- develop transferable skills pursued previously in an academic setting specifically in a professional environment, while enhancing understanding of the role of the Arts in social/cultural life in general and in the context of employment in particular;
- face the linguistic (where applicable), intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
This module develops students' self-awareness, in particular in a non-academic working environment. It develops a sense of professionalism within the workplace, and supports the development of individuals' confidence, flexibility, time-management, their team working and communication skills and, where relevant, can support the development of social and cultural sensitivity and ethical awareness in the work place.

On completion of the year abroad students should have provided evidence that they have:
-gained a deeper understanding of the country and region (including history, economy, culture, and politics) in which they are working;
-improved foreign language skills (in exchanges where the language is not English);
- developed transferable skills in openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and culture.
- Communication skills.
- Experience of initiative and teamwork in a professional environment.
- Enhanced personal development and self-awareness in a professional and accountable environment.
-Qualities and Transferable skills necessary for working in a different professional working environment and living in another country.
-Enhanced practical language skills, both written and oral, in some cases in a language other than English, as required by the demands of study in another country.
-self-reliance and adaptability in developing awareness and understanding of a culture and society other than their own and exercise personal responsibility and decision making.

Private study

Students will be expected to immerse themselves in the culture and learning context of the host country.
- This will involve engaging with the learning and teaching styles of the host school

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The immediate level of monitoring will be undertaken by the host Organisation.
At a more informal level, students will also be expected to maintain contact with their personal tutor and/or the year abroad tutor by regular email. In particular, students should inform the year abroad tutor of any problems or issues.

Successful completion of the module will depend on a satisfactory submission of the Interim and End of Placement Reports from the foreign host (school). The year abroad will be assessed on a pass/fail basis.
