Pre-requisite qualifications

As for the specific programme of study (PGD/MPH (International); PGD/MA Hospital Management; PGD/MA Health Management, Planning & Policy; PGD/MSc International Health). TropEd students are required to have completed an approved core course.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- develop an HRD strategy and critically discuss the role of training within it;
- identify and analyse the training needs of health human resources;
- develop a training programme for health human resources;
- plan and deliver a training activity using appropriate teaching methods;
- critically discuss alternative training evaluation methodologies.

Learning outcomes
- Critically analyse the overall strategy of human resources development.
- Develop understanding of the curriculum development.
- Appraise different strategies of learning/teaching.
- Identify and analyse types of evaluation and assessment.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- carry out training needs assessment and use the result to develop a training curriculum;
- design and deliver a training programme for health workers in different settings;
- critically assess and apply different teaching/learning strategies in low-middle income countries;
- undertake course evaluation and communicate evaluation findings to appropriate bodies in the health system.


Syllabus

The main topics covered in the module are:

1. Introduction to the module; the role of training within HR development.
2. Training needs assessment: methods and approaches.
3. Translating training needs into a curriculum; selection of participants.
4. Designing learning activities; educational methods including participatory techniques and other innovative approaches.
5. Practical sessions on preparation and delivery of a training activity.
6. Evaluation methods in theory and practice.
7. Review and evaluation of the module.

Reading, preparation of presentations and seminars, and preparation of assignments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Group work and exercises done in class are used to monitor learning, with verbal feedback being given by the lecturer.
