Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- chair a discussion effectively and sensitively, without expressing their own opinions on the topics discussed;

- manage their time effectively;

- show a responsible attitude in the fulfilment of duties which affect other people;

- express clearly in writing a good understanding of the educational principles on which proctoring is based, and relate them to their own practical experience as a proctor.

Syllabus

There is no syllabus as such, because proctoring is an activity. A proctor is a final-year undergraduate who chairs weekly one-hour sessions of first-year tutorial groups. The students are given discussion tasks by their module leader, and they report on the outcomes of these tasks to their tutor. As a proctor you will be forbidden to teach the students. Your duties will include the following:
- familiarising yourself with the students' preparatory reading;
- attendance at training seminars;
- keeping an attendance register;
- chairing the students' discussion;
- weekly reporting to the tutor on the group's performance;
- occasionally acting as a stand-by for absent proctors.

In addition you will be expected to research literature on teaching methods in preparation for your assessed essay.

Depending on numbers, you may be asked to take two proctorials a week rather than just one.
