Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:1. Analyse and argue rigorously about a highly complex and ill-defined set of phenomena;
2. Have developed their consciousness of the nature of the language they use;
3. To develop an in-depth project of research.
Syllabus
Building on second year work in the philosophy of logic and language, a particular topic or topics in the philosoph of language will be pursued in depth. The topic chosen will typically be one from amongst the following list of topics:
- Truth
- Vagueness
- Metaphor
- Language and Thought
- Semantics and logic of natural language
- A particular authority in the philosophy of language (e.g. Wittgenstein or Donald Davidson)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be asked to hand in work during one seminar each week which can form the basis of discussion with module leader in office hours.They will be invited to submit draft essay/mock exams prior to formal assessment. The module leader will comment on these on request.
Students will be invited to prepare and present material during seminars.
