Passes in at least one of PHYS1060 or PHYS1110 or equivalent

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module the students should be able to:

- use commonly available laboratory equipment;
- perform laboratory experiments in core physics, obtain useful data and draw conclusions, using effective time management;
- record the procedures, data, calculations and conclusions of their experiments in a notebook;
- utilise statistical and systematic error analysis and critically analyse their data;
- present and communicate their experimental results to others in the form of a scientific paper and an oral presentation;
- develop career skills.

Learning outcomes
Execute and analyse the results of an experiment and evaluate the level of uncertainty in results.
Communicate in writing or orally the results of their work or other scientific information.
Present their skills and qualifications in a format for a future job

Perform experiments.
Acquire and analyse data.
Critical evaluation of data.
Presentation of method and results in written and oral form.


Syllabus

Introductory lecture on laboratory note-taking, report writing, assessment criteria and statistical and critical analysis of experimental data. Students perform experimental components that includes optics, X-ray crystallography, Speed of Sound, specific heat of metals, electronics, mechanical workshop practice and astronomy(*components studied depends on programme).

Private study
