Module summary

A succinct introduction to the study of the key issues in contemporary international security.

Objectives

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
- analyse, understand and discuss theoretical approaches to strategic studies and international security;
- demonstrate a sound basic knowledge of important issues in contemporary international security;
- be able to undertake research in it.

Learning outcomes
Students will acquire a sound and thorough knowledge of:
- theoretical approaches to strategic thought;
- conflict and the international system;
- conceptual approaches to nuclear deterrence and arms control;
- basic outlines of Cold War history.

Knowledge will be based within the disciplines of both Political Science and History.

Skills outcomes
- research skills, including the skills of accessing relevant information from a range of sources;
- assessing, analysing and criticising information;
- appraising relevant concepts and theories;
- presenting and communicating effectively the product of independent research.
