Pre-requisite qualifications

None. Students will be required to apply for specific placements, which will be allocated on a competitive basis (by the module leader in consultation with the placement leaders). Academic performance to date, as well as other relevant skills and experience, will be taken into account.

Objectives

Aims
To enable students to undertake placements that take their degree-related knowledge and skills into non-academic contexts.

Objectives
• To enable students to apply their subject-specific knowledge in a context outside the academy in which that knowledge is relevant, while gaining experience of working in a non-academic environment.
• To enable students to acquire a broad and deep understanding of the contemporary relevance of their degree subjects, and of issues related to their degree subjects arising in the work of various organisations.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will be expected to be able to:

(1) demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the relevance of Theology and Religious Studies, Philosophy and/or History and Philosophy of Science to the work of one or more contemporary organisations (public, private or third-sector);
(2) use their knowledge and understanding of one or more specific topics in Theology and Religious Studies, Philosophy and/or History and Philosophy of Science to produce a report on a contemporary issue to which this knowledge and understanding is relevant;
(3) demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on the application of university-based study of Theology and Religious Studies, Philosophy and/or History and Philosophy of Science, and the skills acquired in a Theology and Religious Studies degree based in one of these subjects, to situations and problems beyond the university context; (4) demonstrate the ability to communicate relevant subject-specific knowledge to a non-specialist audience.


Syllabus

The module focuses on an independent research project.
Students will undertake placements with external partners, which will be public-, private- or third-sector organisations based locally. The specific objectives and parameters for each placement will be agreed between the School and the external partner. Each placement will have a designated ‘placement leader’ from PRHS staff, usually the member of staff responsible for establishing the contact with the external partner. Placements are expected to fall into one of 2 pathways:
(a) Research pathway: Undertaking a piece of research for an external partner, making use of the partner’s facilities, contacts, data sources etc. (Indicative example: Placement with Leeds Church Institute to produce a report for LCI use/publication on churches’ responses to urban deprivation in a specific area of Leeds).
(b) Reflective experience pathway: A work placement within an external organisation, in the course of which the student (with guidance from the module team and from the partner organisation) identifies, reflects on, and produces a report on, some aspect of the relevance of the work of that organisation which is relevant to the TRS/Philosophy/HPS. (Indicative example: Placement with West Yorkshire Police resulting in a report on police engagement with local religious communities in a specific area of Leeds).

Private study

Keeping reflective log including work related to research ethics, 30 hours; background reading and planning related to placement, 90 hours; preparation of report including analysis of data, further reading, and writing up, 150 hours; preparation of final presentation, 60 hours.

Through tutorials (see above). Reflective log to be kept online, accessible to module leader and placement leaders.
