Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able:
• To provide a background to Clinical Psychology as a profession, to outline the remit of Clinical Psychology, and to introduce the concept of psychological formulation
• To discuss evidence regarding the precipitants, causes and maintaining factors for several prevalent psychological disorders
• To critique and discuss a range of cognitive behavioural formulation approaches for different disorders
• To develop skills in utilising models to formulate information from case studies

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should have:

- An understanding of the remit of Clinical Psychology
- An appreciation for the wide range of precipitants, causes and maintenance factors for psychological disorders
- An ability to critique different perspectives on the causes of psychological disorders
- Knowledge of a range of psychological models for understanding disorders
- An ability to use psychological models to formulate information from case studies
- An ability to evaluate and critique research studies investigating CBT and psychological therapies

Skills outcomes
- Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in the selection, evaluation and application of published research relating to clinical psychology, formulation and CBT
- Students will develop skills in applying theory to practice, via the application of models to case examples
- Students will gain an appreciation for the ways in which wider policy and health service initiatives impact upon the delivery mental health care interventions

3. Anxiety: Classification, Causes, Models and Formulation
4. Suicidality: Classification, Causes, Models and Formulation
5. Bipolar Disorder: Classification, Causes, Models and Formulation
6. Psychosis: Classification, Causes, Models and Formulation
7. Eating disorders: Classification, Causes, Models and Formulation
8. Clinical Psychology in the workplace
Seminars:
Students will develop group presentations and present these in smaller seminars (15-20 students per seminar).

Private study

Students will have 132.5 private study hours. It is envisaged that this time will be spent as follows:

Reading for each lecture: 8 x 5 hours 40 hours
Preparation for the seminar: 17 hours
Revision and practice exam questions 17 hours
Independent literature searches and reading 58.5 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

To monitor progress, in week 4 students will be asked to complete a group presentation. This will provide students with practice of applying their knowledge and understanding of psychological formulation to a realistic case example. This assessment will provide students with the opportunity to develop oral communication, interpersonal, planning and time management skills. This grade will not contribute to their module grade, but students who do not pass will receive a 5 marks grade penalty.
In week 6, students will be required to complete an in-course MCQ test. This will provide students with practice questions for the final MCQ exam. This will be graded and feedback on performance will be provided to students.

Students need to pass the MCQ exam to pass the module, but their score will not contribute to their grade. Students will be able to re-take this exam as many times as is necessary in order to pass. Students who fail to present will have 5 mark deducted from their overall module mark.
