Module summary
Important: places on this course are limited, and will be granted on a first- come, first-serve basis, but only after students for whom Russian is a named part of their degree have been enrolled for it. Giving studnets an insight into one of the richest, most interesting and inadequately explored cultures of the world, Beginning Russian Language is demanding yet rewarding. This module gives you a basic knowledge of the Russian alphabet, vocabulary and grammar, which will be improved upon throughout the semester. Emphasis will be placed on those areas of the language and grammar that are particularly difficult for native speakers of English.Students will also be exposed to authentic Russian through the medium of reading texts and recorded material. Knowledge of Russian affords you a better understanding of the country once described by Churchill as "a riddle enshrined in a mystery and wrapped in an enigma".Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be familiar with the pronunciation, alphabet and script of Russian and will have been introduced to the case system of Russian nouns, adjectives and pronouns and the basic forms of the verb. They will also have acquired a vocabulary that will enable them to understand spoken and written Russian in several registers, and they will be able to express themselves in spoken and written Russian, using the vocabulary that they will have acquired.
Syllabus
This module provides a practical introduction to the Russian language. It assumes no previous knowledge of Russian. Vocabulary, grammar and communicative situations will be introduced progressively to enable students to gradually expand their passive and active language skills.
Particular emphasis will be placed on the areas of Russian grammar that are difficult for native speakers of English and those features which present an awkward contrast with English. Students will also be exposed to authentic Russian through the medium of reading texts, recorded material and practical classes with native speakers.
In addition, we will be covering basic IT skills in English and Russian (optional for elective students).
