Module summary

This module is intended for students who enter with Russian A Level or equivalent. The module is designed to train participants in all aspects of practical language skills, and aims to prepare students for their period of study in Russia by focusing on authentic written and audio-visual material in a variety of registers and styles.

Objectives

This module will train participants in grammar, listening, speaking and writing through a variety of language exercises, students will also be taught the transferable skill of word-processing in Russian.

Students will be prepared for their period of study in Russia by regular use of authentic written and audio-visual material in a variety of registers and styles.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- understand general conversation on everyday topics and handle conversational subjects adequately;
- read authentic texts (which may be abridged) on a variety of non-specialist subjects;
- produce simple, structured pieces of creative writing, demonstrating grammatical accuracy and a broad vocabulary on selected topics;
- have a thorough knowledge of the essentials of Russian grammar and demonstrate the ability to adhere to the rules of Russian grammar both in speaking and writing.

Skills outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- touch type in Russian in standard software, (in Microsoft Word and email packages);
- understand authentic speech, audio recordings and written texts of a suitable level;
- assimilate and develop essential vocabulary from teaching materials;
- recognise and identify basic grammatical and syntactical patterns in the language materials used;
- take an active part in classroom discussions in the target language;
- have an awareness of a range of registers in both the spoken and written language.


Syllabus

The module will consist of four practical language classes weekly, covering:
- grammar;
- translation;
- oral and writing skills.

Training in word-processing in Russian will be provided via an induction session in Week 2 and students are expected to improve their typing skills independently using an electronic typing tutor.

- 80 hours: class preparation and homework
- 4.5 hours: writing of assessed essay
- 34 hours exam preparation and revision

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Short homework assignments set weekly
- Regular in-class tests (30% of module assessment)
- Mock written and oral exams (not formally assessed) will be held in December for the sake of formative feedback.
