Objectives

During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of the target language;
- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target culture;
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of:
- being able to speak and understand everyday conversation with native speakers, read texts of an intermediate level and write grammatically accurate Russian;
- having acquired academic and practical knowledge of contemporary Russia;
- having learned how to live and study successfully in Russia.

Skills outcomes
Students will have had the opportunity to develop and practise:
- qualities and transferable skills related to Russian and Slavonic Studies, valuable for employment, e.g. ability to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources;
- interpersonal skills required to operate in Russian society;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners.

Syllabus

A course of at least 18 hours per week tuition in Russian language and culture at Moscow State University's Centre for International Education (TsMO), with termly examinations. Students are also required to work on a Residence Abroad Project on a freely chosen topic, for which academic support will be provided at TsMO.

The year abroad assessment comprises the methods detailed in the 'Coursework' section below, with the added requirement that students must satisfy the examiners at TsMO, passing all examinations and class tests set by TsMO with a grade of 3 or above (on a scale of 1-5).

The Residence Abroad Project is submitted at the beginning of Semester One in the academic year following the year abroad, and together with an oral presentation on the project topic, forms part of the assessment of the core language module for that year (SLAV2101 or SLAV2102).

Private study

Students will be expected to immerse themselves in the culture of the host country and undertake those activities necessary for successful completion of the year abroad, including working on the Residence Abroad project throughout their stay in Russia.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will maintain contact with their personal tutors and/or the Year Abroad Co-ordinator by e-mail. Students will also complete a written plan of their Residence Abroad Project to be submitted in January. Regular contact is maintained between the Department and the on-site Year Abroad Co-ordinator, who sends termly reports on student attendance, progress and examination results.
