Module summary

This module introduces students to concepts of race and ethnicity. It provides a framework within which students can develop and understanding of ethnic relations and difference within Britain through historical and contemporary perspectives. This module aims to inform you of difference and disadvantage between ethnic groups in Britain and to analyse some of the reasons for these. Subjects covered will include:- theoretical perspectives on race and ethnicity, identity, immigration flows- demographic profiles based on Census data- multiculturalism and segregation- popular culture representations of ethnic minorities including film, TV, music- representations of gender- social and political reaction to immigration, asylum seekers, citizenship tests- riots 1950's, 60's, 80's, 2001 Riots- Racial harassment and violence and Stephen Lawrence and Crime.Students without A level Sociology are at no disadvantage. Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of sociological perspectives on race, ethnicity, ethnic identities, diasporic cultures and cultural hybridity;
- examine migration flows, settlement patterns and how processes of exclusion are constructed socially and politically;
- examine multiculturalism to issues of identity, ethnicity and citizenship;
- demonstrate knowledge of popular culture and the relationship of ethnic minorities to it;
- gain knowledge of sociological research on race, ethnicity and difference;
- analyse race and ethnic relations using contemporary, historical and comparative perspectives.
