Module summary
In this module, students will learn the fundamentals of petrophysical analysis applied to the petroleum industry and well log interpretation as well as application of geological and basin analysis for assessment of hydrocarbon propectivity of reservoirs. Objectives
Petrophysics: understand the fundamentals of petrophysics and its use in the analysis of cores and geophysical well logs for reservoir characterisation and hydrocarbon assessment, acquire skills in the analysis of geophysical well logs for determining lithology, porosity and hydrocarbon saturation; appreciate the petrophysical causes of, and methods of quantifying, anelastic attenuation and its use in the assessment of lithology, fractures and reservoir pore content.Petroleum Geology: understand the principal geologic controls upon hydrocarbon prospectivity in sedimentary basins, appreciate the impact of commodity economics, the tax regime and risk analysis on the exploration and production of hydrocarbons.
Learning outcomes
After completing this module, students will be able to: understand the fundamentals of petrophysics and its use in the analysis of geophysical well logs for reservoir characterisation and hydrocarbon assessment; acquire the skills in the analysis of geophysical well logs for determining lithology, porosity and hydrocarbon saturation; outline geological factors that make up the petroleum system and which need to be assessed in any exploration project; understand the structural, burial and thermal history of hydrocarbon basins; have experience working in a team environment under strict time limitations on a mock exploration project; have awareness of the structure of the hydrocarbon industry, its activities and the role of geophysics in hydrocarbon exploration. The learning outcomes will be assessed using well log reports, hydrocarbon prospectivity report, integrated exploration exercise and unseen exam.
Syllabus
Petrophysics: formation evaluation: geoelectrical properties, resistivity borehole logging, induction and SP logs, porosity logs: sonic and density, porosity logs: neutron and natural gamma ray, magnetic nuclear resonance logs, image logs and determination of lithology and porosity
.
Petroluem Geology: introduction to structure of the petroleum industry, geological controls on hydrocarbon prospectivity, origin and composition of hydrocarbon source rocks and resultant petroleums, reservoir properties at the grain scale and at the field scale - consequences of multiphase fluids for relative permeabilities through reservoir media, structural and stratigraphic entrapment, relationship of hydrocarbon maturation and volumetrics to burial history and timing of maturation, reserve evaluation and risk analysis, development and construction of a drilling proposal. Geology of unconventional reservoirs.
