Pre-requisite qualifications: Acceptance onto BSc/BA 'International' or 'Europe' Study Abroad programme.
Candidates must also have secured a place at a University overseas.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will have consolidated their experiences and have engaged in structured reflection and review of their year abroad. Students will be encouraged to identify transferable skills developed in the year abroad, as well as any academic differences they may find. Students will use the workbook to formalise their entries and experiences. Students will also have an interview with the programme Co-ordinator when he/she returns from the Year Abroad.

Students are assessed by a workbook listing modules taken and marks obtained abroad, and reflecting on both academic and personal development during the year abroad. The workbook is assessed on a pass/fail basis by a member of academic staff on return to Leeds. A pass is required for progression in the International or Europe Programme; failure will result in reversion to the appropriate BA/BSc programme without a year abroad. Students must pass a defined number of credits in line with University norms as defined in the student's Learning Contract.

Skills outcomes
The module places considerable emphasis on:
developing the skills necessary for self-managed and lifelong learning (e.g. working independently, time management and organisation skills);
identifying and working towards targets for personal, academic and career development;
developing an adaptable and flexible approach to study and work.

The module places moderate emphasis on:
identifying individual and collective goals and responsibilities and performing in a manner appropriate to these roles;

The module places some emphasis on:
receiving and responding to a variety of information sources (e.g. textual numerical, verbal, graphical);
communicating appropriately to a variety of audiences in written, verbal and graphical form;
recognising and respecting the views and opinions of other team members;
evaluating performance as an individual and a team member.

Syllabus

To be arranged with the School and host institution but will normally comprise a combination of taught modules in the appropriate discipline and/or allied subject(s) chosen to complement the Leeds degree programme. Students will be expected to complete a credit load comparable to the average for full-time students at the partner institution, and at an appropriate level. A lower load may be approved at foreign language institutions, in line with Study Abroad Office guidelines. The credit load required and the programme to be studied by the student will be recorded in a Learning Contract specific to the partner institution. This (and any subsequent changes) will be approved by the Year Abroad Co-ordinator for the programme.
The student will be expected to produce written entries and submit them to the Programme Co-ordinator at specific times. The entries will help the student reflect on the experience of the year abroad.
