Module summary

This is an integrated Spanish language and language skills module, designed to enhance and consolidate inherited structures, in a variety of contexts. Alongside the enhancement of the four basic language skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing) students will gain competence in the following transferable skills: the ability to appreciate and use nuanced language at an advanced level, the ability to appreciate and use at an advanced level tone, register, structure and style in oral and written communication, and the ability to interact and negotiate orally in complex situations. Students wishing to take this module should have passed SPPO1010 in Level 1.

Objectives

Students should achieve the level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in Spanish, acquiring a level of lexical, grammatical and functional competence which will allow them to communicate in a wide range of subjects both in writing and orally in their Year/Term Abroad.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module students will be able to :
- face with confidence the linguistic challenges of their Term Abroad or Year Abroad and take full responsibility for their own language learning outside the classroom in a Spanish-speaking country;
- understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including discussions in various fields of Spanish and Hispanic Society;
- interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without significant strain for either party;
- produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.


Syllabus

Students will have one weekly 2-hour session of language teaching and language activities in a large group (lectures) and one weekly 1-hour tutorial in small groups

The course will be organised around contemporary topics of social relevance in the Hispanic World and/or practical importance for the Year Abroad, covering issues such as cultural diversity, social development, media and cultural production, immigration, housing or family life.

During the lecture, students will practice advanced listening and reading comprehension skills working with authentic materials related to the topics of the module Linguistic and sociocultural content will be covered in the context of those materials.
The lectures will be supported with weekly grammar exercises.

During the tutorial, students will be given well-structured opportunities for oral practice on the topics covered, including role-plays, presentations and debates.
