Module summary

This module looks at the roots of the nationalist tensions which are visible in present-day Spain. As such, several issues are addressed. - First, the attempt by the Spanish state and Spanish political and cultural elites to construct a unified nation state from the late-nineteenth century. - Second, the revolt against Spanish rule in Cuba in the late-nineteenth century and its political impact in Spain. - Third, the rise and consolidation of Catalan and Basque nationalism from the 1890s, and, finally, the construction of nationalist/regionalist identities in other parts of Spain, especially in Galicia and Valencia. We will be asking the question, to what extent can Spain be considered a "failed nation state"?, and will also reflect upon the complex mosaic of national and regional identities which crystallised in twentieth-century Spain.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have acquired a firm grounding in one of the major questions which modern and contemporary Spain has faced. It also aims to provide students-within the context of a case study-with an understanding of the place of nationalism in the modern world.

Students should, on completion of the module, have the skills to analyse historical issues in greater depth. Finally, through seminar preparation, presentations and essay writing the module should serve to further improve students' presentational and communicative skills, and reading in the target language.

Syllabus

This module will examine the difficulties the Spanish state and political elites experienced in creating a concept and practice of the Spanish nation on which most Spaniards could agree. The module will begin with a general introduction on the place of nationalism in the modern world. We will then deal with five distinct areas.

- First we will look at the Spanish nation building between 1868-1939.
- Second, we shall examine the revolt against Spanish rule in Cuba.
- Third, we will study the cause and consequences of the rise of the Catalan and Basque nationalism.
- Finally, we shall deal with the suppression of the 'peripheral nationalisms' under the Franco regime and their subsequent resurgence.

Feedback will be given orally after the student presentation and in writing on the student essays. Finally, students are encouraged to come to office hours for additional discussion and feedback
