Module summary

The module will provide students with experience of SEM in practice, allowing them to apply the principles learned in the concurrent Functional sports anatomy and clinical assessment, and Musculoskeletal medicine and sports injuries modules. This will provide hands-on practical experience of performing a range of duties at pitch side and in MSK clinics, consistent with standards applied in a clinical setting. The content will include similar shared CBD style cases with the sports injuries module, including formative online material and face-to-face contact days. Topics covered will include history taking and assessment in clinics, trauma and return to play at pitch side, legal and ethical considerations in SEM practice. Students will be expected to complete the WADA doping certificate online during this module. Delivery will involve clinical experts in MSK treatment and pitch side trauma, with practical experience in exercise medicine. MSK placements will be in 3 NHS MSK locations; students must attend 4 clinic sessions - they may arrange their own equivalents, but need approval. Session 1 & 2 will allow students access to patients to see themselves and discuss with tutor.Pitch side placements are available at Leeds United, Yorkshire Carnegie, Leeds Rhinos, York City FC, GB Basketball and Tough Mudder events. Students may in addition consider attending the London Marathon and Great North run. A minimum of one event and one team match day should be completed as a part of the 3 sessions. Ideally, students should join a team in an assisting capacity and stay for the whole season, participating as much as they can e.g. one game a month.An example schedule over the semester would be:Session - Role1 - Observation: Event2 - Observation: Another sport or repetition3 - York City FC Medical Quarterly trainingOver 12 weeks the students will be signposted to specific FIFA diploma modules in each week: e.g. Concussion, SCAT and World rugby learning, Doping and WADA, Ethics. Assessment: multidisciplinary case study (history, assessment, treatment), completion of 1 eLearning module (WADA doping).

Objectives

The objectives are for students to:
- understand the medical requirements required at a sporting event and club both on competition days as well as out of competition
- develop sufficient skills to enable effective practice
- give advice around doping to athletes, and recognise the role of the SEM practitioner in the process
- consider the ethical issues surrounding SEM practice

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- manage common pitch side emergencies
- recognise the legislation relevant for sports and event cover
- carry out a SCAT assessment and recognise its role in managing concussion
- recognise the management of treatment of common sporting injuries, and independently evaluate their implications for return to play
- discuss the ethical issues and dilemma raised in sport, particularly for a health care professional
- determine how record keeping and managing confidential records can be different from normal clinical practice, and challenging in a sporting environment

Syllabus

The module will cover the following:
- 1 hour practical feedback on each monthly teaching day
- 3 placements, each 4 hours long (12h total minimum) in at least 2 disciplines
- WADA doping eLearning module
- 1 x York City FC Medical Quarterly training
- Self-organised placements/clinics

Private study

Private study will include engaging with online resources provided, undertaking background reading associated with MSK clinics, and preparation for placements.

Students will be expected to spend at least 2 days pitch side attendance, and 2 days shadowing MSK Consultant, plus complete the WADA drug doping eLearning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A member of the academic or clinical teaching staff will be allocated as tutor to the group, and will meet with students every 3 weeks to assess progress, discuss issues arising, and set objectives for the next study period.

Clinical tutors will lead the placement sessions and will be available to answer any questions the students may have, and monitor progress (e.g. assess clinical competence in assessments).

The portfolio will be reviewed and discussed with the mentor or Course Director on a regular basis.

Students will receive guidance during training sessions on placements.

The module is assessed on a Pass/Fail basis. Each assessment is a compulsory pass element of the module. Failure to submit an item will result in a V code being appended to the module mark. All elements must be passed in order to pass the module. Additional online lectures to be made available: Psychological aspects of recovery (Dr Burke), Psychological management of patients (Dr Yu), Exercise and cancer (Dr Burke)
