Module summary
This module will enable students to understand the technologies behind the production of textiles and clothing and how these affect creative possibilities and limitations for designers. It will also enable the students to understand the implications of technology decisions such as cost, appropriateness and effectiveness. The design technology interface has long been a source of confusion, misinterpretation and frustration for both disciplines. This module will enable the students to develop a mindset which will make them valuable to and valued by the textile and related industries. Objectives
- To introduce the concepts of Design Elements and principles and how these are used in the various areas of textile design and related areas.- To explain the various technologies involved in the textile and related industries.
- To introduce the implications of technological processes and parameters on the design process.
- To enable students to analyse flexible fibrous assemblies and accurately determine their components and the technological processes use to produce them.
- To enable students to examine and identify faults and their causes in flexible fibrous assemblies.
Learning outcomes
On completion the students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- Understand the application of design elements and principles at different stages in the development and production of flexible fibrous assemblies.
- Understand the various technological processes used in the development and production of flexible fibrous assemblies.
- Understand the implications technological processes on existing and future directions of design solutions.
- Analyse flexible fibrous assemblies and report accurately on the components and technological processes used to produce them.
- Examine and identify faults and their causes in flexible fibrous assemblies.
