Module summary

This module allows a student to select and undertake a research project in health informatics.

Objectives

On completion of this module students will be able to:
- assess the feasibility of potential topics for health informatics research
- carry out a literature review
- select and apply the appropriate research methods for their agreed project area
- demonstrate independent application of the knowledge, skills and techniques that he or she has acquired during the MSc programme in carrying out and reporting on a research project
- demonstrate skills in project management and research presentation
- present a high quality report and poster of the research project
- produce a critical evaluation of the process and outcome of the project through a reflective log.

Learning outcomes
- Take a pro-active and self-reflective role in understanding the health domain, including being able to critically and creatively identify and evaluate potential solutions against political, economic, social and technological constraints.
- Make a strong personal contribution to leading innovation in health care.

Skills outcomes
Independent application of health informatics knowledge and research methods, project management and report writing.


Syllabus

The syllabus is essentially the stages of a research project:
- Introduction to research projects
- Reflective logs
- Project definition
- Literature review
- Project plan
- Project design
- Implementation
- Analysis
- Report and poster preparation
- Evaluation.

This module is primarily based on self study but students will have a first (and possibly second) supervisor who will agree the project with the student and guide and monitor progress through regular meetings.

Group seminars will be delivered at key stages during the module ie at the start of the project, mid stage and prior to writing up the project.

Private study

This module is based on private study.

Students will spend their private study time:
- identifying, refining and agreeing a project proposal
- preparing a literature review
- planning and designing their project
- implementing the project
- writing up the report and preparing the poster
- evaluating the project.

Students will also:
- produce a reflective log
- prepare for tutorials and seminars.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Seminar discussions and one to one tutorials with the supervisor(s).
- E-mail will be used to provide feedback and support to students.
