Pre-requisite qualifications

Students should have achieved a Certificate in Counselling Skills (minimum 100 hours class contact as a coherent group) + experience in the helping role.

Access to a suitable client group in an appropriate organisation, i.e. one that is professionally managed/effectively monitored and offers the student opportunities to engage in ongoing counselling work.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Begin to demonstrate an integration of skills in their therapeutic practice.
- Identify, evaluate and respond to verbal and non-verbal client behaviour.
- Provide professionally appropriate conditions for effective counselling.
- Analyse aspects of the effective use of the therapeutic relationship.
- Identify and analyse aspects of self that enhance or hinder their competence as a counsellor.
- Analyse their own and others' taped case material.
- Consider the application of counselling skills in brief and longer term contexts.
- Make effective us of both individual and group supervision opportunities.
- Reflect on and provide professionally appropriate conditions for effective counselling.
- Critically evaluate ethical and moral aspects of professional practice dilemmas.
- Offer and make use of constructive positive and critical feedback on practice work.

Syllabus

With the emphasis on the expectations of the professional and ethical practitioner, this module will enable students to begin to reflect upon and analyse specific aspects of their counselling practice. From the initial assessment, through the process in the working alliance and the movement towards an effective closure, analysis of case examples and dilemmas will encourage an increasing awareness of good practice.

Analysis and discussion of case material, reflecting upon ethical, professional and moral issues and dilemmas, will enable the support of an applied learning experience. A practice file will be maintained with a client log of sessional work.

Through the use of experiential activities students will develop a variety of skills pertinent to the development of an effective application of self in the therapeutic relationship.

By analysing and reflecting upon their own and others' engagement with the process of one-to-one counselling, the emerging practitioner will consider:

- Interpersonal phenomena (what the counsellor feels, senses and intuits about the client) that inform interventions and responses
- Intrapersonal reactions (what the counsellor feels, senses and intuits about themselves) and their possible significance to both the client's and their own responses).


Students will apply the skills they learn during the module in clinical practice carried out at an appropriate counselling organisation. In order to meet the minimum requirement of 120 hours of practice to be completed during the programme, they will need to conduct an average of 3 sessions a week during both years of the programme. Students are responsible for locating and arranging their own clincal work and this is made clear at interview and in programme handbooks. They are provided with written guidelines and verbal information to help them identify suitable agencies. Tutors seek to develop new links with such agencies and montitor existing provision on an ongoing basis.

Teaching methods

Practical classes: 60 hours (e.g. 30 x 2 hours);


Study weekend: 4 hours

Recording observations, impressions, reactions and reflections on skills activities: 35 hours;
Preparation for group supervision: 20 hours;
Reading: 90 hours;
Assignments: 76 hours;
Attending external supervision: 15 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Practice critique on live skills activity (Semester 1).
- Tutor and peer feedback on activities and skills.
- Feedback from the external supervisor.

Methods of assessment

1. Critique based on live skills activity with tutor & peer feedback and self evaluation (1500 words, after 10 weeks - 20%).
2. a) Assessment of a 20 minute section of an audiotaped client session (after 24 weeks - Pass/Refer);
b) Critical analysis of the taped client session in
(a) above (2000 words - after 24 weeks - 60%).
3. Reflections on practice (1500 words approx.) + Counselling Supervision and Client Logs (end of module - 20%)
4. External Supervisor's report (Pass/Refer - by the end of the module).
5. Group Supervisor's report (Pass/Refer - by the end of the module).

Students must have achieved a 'pass' in all elements of the module in order to progress to year 2.
