Mammography Technique (HECS5259M)

This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

This module develops understanding of the use of mammography in the investigation of breast disease, equips students with the underpinning knowledge and allows them to apply this whilst developing competence to perform the full range of mammography techniques required in screening, symptomatic and surveillance settings. This module also allows the student to apply theoretical knowledge to that gained in the co-requisite modules.

Objectives

To provide the student with a sophisticated understanding of the current and evolving role of mammographic imaging in breast disease and an in depth specialist knowledge whilst they develop mastery in the performance of appropriate mammographic examinations to high technical and patient / client care standards in a variety of clinical settings.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- critically evaluate the principles of mammographic imaging and apply them to the investigation of individuals at risk of, or with suspected, breast disease;
- demonstrate an in-depth specialist knowledge and a critical understanding of appropriate preparation and positioning of equipment, individuals and tissue specimens for mammographic imaging;
- demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the preparation and positioning of equipment and individuals for mammography guided interventional techniques;
- critically reflect on their to performance of mammography examinations and make judgements about how this can be adapted to optimise image quality, minimise radiation dose and meet the needs of individual service users and carers;
- demonstrate a critical understanding of risks to healthcare personnel & service users during mammography examinations;
- critically evaluate the relative benefits of X-ray mammography against alternative / emerging diagnostic techniques;
- critically reflect on the experience of mammography service users / carers.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to
- Critically appraise an individual’s clinical need for appropriate examination and select an appropriate technique
- Acquire, interpret and report appropriate examinations competently
- Critically evaluate clinical and other relevant information to determine when additional examinations / procedures are required
- Critically evaluate examinations for technical and diagnostic quality
- Assess and respond to an individual’s physical and psychological care needs during the examination.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students and their clinical mentors are encouraged to use the formative clinical and academic assessment process regularly throughout the module to develop self-assessment skills and to generate formative feedback identifying student progress and where additional learning and skill development is required.
Peer and tutor feedback also given in case study discussions, assessment preparation seminars/quizzes and tutor feedback on draft assignments.
