Objectives

By the end of the module students should:
- have extended the range of practical skills learned in earlier years;
- enhanced their problem solving abilities and developed a self-help attitude to the design and conduct of practical work;
- have a better aptitude for team work; and
- have a better understanding of how to communicate science via a poster presentation, an abstract and scientific paper.

- Learning new laboratory techniques
- Data gathering, validation, analysis, and interpretation
- Experimental design
- Literature searching and evaluation.


Syllabus

A four week laboratory-based project on a selected topic.

Each topic will include an exercise in team work in order to:
- survey relevant literature,
- present a plan of the proposed work,
- conduct experiments and present the results and conclusions in the forms of a scientific paper,
- abstract and poster.

Regular review meetings will be held at which students will be expected to review progress through an oral presentation.
