Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental principles of modern techniques of chromatographic and electrically-driven separations;
- select the appropriate method for given applications, including pharmaceutical, environmental and industrial situations;
- Summarise a published paper on one application of separation methods.

Syllabus

- Chromatography
- General theory of chromatographic resolution. The Chromatographic column.
- Chromatographic detectors. Gas chromatography with packed and capillary columns
- High Performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Size-exclusion chromatography. Ion chromatography.
- Electrically driven separations
- Gel electrophoresis. Capillary electrophoresis: theory and techniques. Micellar electrokinetic chromatography. Capillary electrochromatography.
- Applications
- Chiral separations. Analysis of proteins.
