Objectives

This module offers students on the MA New Media the opportunity to develop an independent project linked to the content of one of the named modules on the BA Hons New Media programme (COMM3780 Mobile Media and COMM3790 Citizen Media) based on an individual directed study model. Students attend the lectures of the audited 3rd year BA module, but design their own project around the issues raised during that module – as a more advanced and sustained piece of work.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of a specific new media concept, practice or theory
- Devise, plan and execute a small scale independent project based on an individual directed study model
- Identify appropriate methodologies and theoretical frameworks
- Locate and critique appropriate secondary sources, situating the project within its research contexts
- Identify key criteria against which the project is assessed
- Monitor progress against agreed milestones
- Demonstrate a general overview of the subject they have chosen and the ability to locate own subject within this context
- Demonstrate their ability to explore and research a particular area, using appropriate tools and methods.
- Work independently
- Critically analyze and engage with materials

Syllabus

In negotiation with the programme leader and leader of the chosen module, the student devises an individual directed study project which is linked to a specific module from named undergraduate modules on the BA Hons New Media programme. The student is required to attend classes for this chosen module. A learning contract is agreed with the module leader, and the student is required to deliver a short oral report on the project mid-semester to be delivered to the programme leader, module leader of the module being audited, and peers. The learning contract (which may be revised in the course of the semester) identifies key criteria appropriate to the nature of the project against which it will be assessed.

Private study

Students choose an undergraduate module in which they participate to enhance their knowledge of the area covered on the module for their individual directed study project. Private study is made up of the identification and location of appropriate sources for their project, defining the parameters and terms of their project, planning and executing their project and monitoring their progress.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through: the learning contract, which is agreed in a tutorial early in the semester and may be revised in consultation with the tutor as the project develops; a short oral report to their tutor and leader of the module they are auditing in a mid-semester seminar; a detailed plan submitted to tutor for comments; final assessment.
