Module summary
This module aims to introduce the concepts of elementary pattern cutting, garment construction, manufacturing methodology and terminology. The principles of garment specification and fit will be introduced through lectures, demonstrations and elementary sample production. Students will gain an understanding of the machinery and technology used to manufacture fashion products and will develop an understanding of appropriate manufacturing methods for specific clothing applications and simple fabric structures.Objectives
The purpose of the module is to:- Introduce the production process for garment and fashion article production
- Introduce a range of manufacturing methods used in the production of fashion articles
- Develop an understanding of garment specification in relation to basic fabric structures
- Develop an understanding of how technology is and can be used in the design and manufacture of fashion articles
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of technologies in apparel production;
- Produce elementary samples which adhere to industrial standards;
- Understand the basic principles of garment specification;
- Be able to safely operate basic garment manufacturing technology;
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the garment production processes.
Syllabus
In this module, students will be introduced to a range of manufacturing methods used in the production of fashion garments, including an overview of stitch formations, machine and bed types. Garment specification and fit in relation to basic fabric structures will be discussed. Current industrial practices and standards relating to garment production will be reviewed.
In addition, students will develop practical skills in basic pattern cutting, safe operation of basic garment manufacturing technologies and simple garment construction.

Delivery type | Number | Length hours | Student hours |
Lecture | 1 | 1.00 | 1.00 |
Lecture | 10 | 0.50 | 5.00 |
Practical | 10 | 1.50 | 15.00 |
Private study hours | 79.00
Total Contact hours | 21.00
Total hours (100hr per 10 credits) | 100.00 |
Private study
Private study time will be spent as follows:- Reading set texts (70 hours)
-
- Compiling a construction journal to document the manufacture of samples made (10 hours)
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students progress will be monitored continuously through regular attendance at lectures and practical sessions and feedback will be given at tutorials at strategic times during the moduleMethods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Portfolio | Portfolio and construction notes | 100.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100.00 |
The portfolio assessment will be reassessed by an alternative method. Reassessment of the LOs of this module will not include a direct practical element. Instead, a written report (2500-3000 words) addressing all the LOs will be set. In order to assess the skill based LOs (‘produce elementary samples that adhere to industrial standards’ and ‘be able to safely operate basic garment manufacturing technology’) , the said written work will include a description of the processes of seam manufacture and machinery operation that will reflect the student’s approach to the practical aspect of this unit.
