Objectives
The module content is designed to introduce students to a wide range of visual research skills and to emphasise the importance of the concept of drawing, both in its broadest sense and in relation to the textile design process.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- use drawing as a vehicle to analyse, record and respond to observation and other sources
- demonstrate a familiarity with the relationship between materials, processes and concepts in the design process
- demonstrate a familiarity of the context within which their practice operates.
Syllabus
This project-based module introduces a wide range of visual research skills and drawing processes. Students will learn about the processes of drawing and painting from observation, process-led drawing and painting, on-site and studio photography, researching and sourcing appropriate materials and referencing and using the work of appropriate artists, designers and critics to inform practice.
The module encourages critical debate and individual reflection as a means of developing student skill and awareness in evaluating their practice and development. Short seminars are used to support theory and written aspects of the module.
The module is assessed through two projects:
- the first will explore both traditional and non-traditional drawing approaches through which the student will be able to widen their understanding of drawing through innovation and risk;
- the second will employ these strategies in relation to a textile design development project, incorporating an introduction to visual research strategies.
