Pre-requisite qualifications

5 GCSE passes grade C and above
2 A level passes (or equivalent)
These must include English and Biology

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- outline the work which may be undertaken by the dental hygienist and dental therapist
- describe their professional, legal and ethical obligations
- outline the Health and Safety issues that are applicable to clinical practice
- undertake basic First Aid procedures
- explain the role of professionals complementary to dentistry as members of the dental team
- describe current national and international trends in the delivery of dental care
- understand the principles of patient care and management
- recognise the need to follow a written treatment plan
- explain the importance of keeping adequate records
- describe the basic features of dental caries, tooth wear and periodontal disease.

Syllabus

- Explore the role, legal and ethical obligations of enrolled dental hygienists and therapists
- Cover regulations relating to the hygienist/therapist contained within the Health and Safety at Work Act
- Discuss and demonstrate the basic principles of first aid
- Discuss the organisation and delivery of hospital, community and general dental services in the context of current national and international trends
- Look at the role of the hygienist/therapist within the context of the extended team of professionals complementary to dentistry
- Discuss the importance of accurate record keeping and patient confidentiality in accordance with the delivery of treatment from treatment plan and prescription
- Identify the basic features of dental diseases
- Induction to IT and library service.
