Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- demonstrate an understanding of basic cell biology
- describe the cellular structure and function of human tissues and organs
- outline the general organisation of teh main systems of the body
- describe the structure and function of the circulatory system
- describe the structure and function of the respiratory system
- describe the structure and function of the digestive system
- describe the structure and function ot the nervous system
- describe the structure and function of the skeletal system
- describe the structure and function of the lymphatic system
- describe the structure and function of the endocrine system
- describe in broad terms the regional anatomy of the head and neck
- describe those structures adjacent to and related to the oral cavity
- describe in detail the structures of the oral cavity
- understand the anatomy and function of the human deciduous and permanent dentitions
- understand the anatomy, development and function of the oral tissues and related structures
- understand the histology and embryology of human teeth, their supporting structures and oral tissues
- understand the composition and function of saliva
- understand the process of mastication and deglutition
- describe the physiology of taste
- describe the process of eruption and resorption of teeth
- recognise and identify deciduous and permanent teeth on the basis of their morphology
- use current terminology, tooth nomenclature and dental charting techniques.
Syllabus
General anatomy, physiology and histology of cell structure, tissue make up and the organisation of tissue within organs.
Histology of epithelial tissue, connective tissue, nervous tissue, skin, major salivary glands, cartilage and bone.
Composition and function of blood to include the clotting cascade.
Structure and function of the heart, skin, respiratory, digestive, nervous, circulatory skeletal, lymphatic and endocrine system.
General knowledge of the skull with detailed knowledge of the maxilla, mandible, temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and relevant skull foramina.
Structure and function of the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, hard and soft palate and major salivary glands.
Muscles of facial expression and mastication, the nerve and blood supply.
Structure and function action, joint classification and clinical signigicance of the TMJ.
Arterial supply, lymphatic and venous drainage of the head and neck.
Detailed nerve supply to the oral cavity and para-oral structures.
Histology and development of dental tissues (enamel, dentine, pulp, cementium, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, gingivae).
Devlopment of the head, jaws and oral cavity, including defects such as cleft palate and age changes in the oral cavity.
Morphology and development (including eruption) of the deciduous and permanent dentitions.
Composition and function of saliva.
Physiology of taste, mastication and deglutition.
