5 x GCSE passes grade C and above
2 A level passes (or the equivalent)
These must include English and Biology

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- Understand the basis for epidemiological studies in the provision of health care
> understand the scientific basis of oral health education
> understand the basic statically methodology and interpretation of findings in epidemiological studies
> understand public health measures in the control of disease and the promotion of health, to include community based oral

- Health issues
> understand the principles of health promotion, including oral health initiatives
> describe the major epidemiological studies of oral health, changing patterns of oral and dental disease and the cause and effect of the changes

- Describe the indices used in oral epidemiological studies
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles of prevention of dental disease to include mechnaical and chemical plaque control, topical and systemic flouride, fissure sealants, diet analysis and nutrition intake
- Demonstrate the ability to use common periodontal indices
- Describe the relationship between diet and general, dental and oral health and recognise the influence on diet of age, culture and occupation
- Discuss the role of diet in dental disease
- Understand human development with reference to child growth and physical, mental and emotional development
- Appreciate the princiles of psychology and sociology sufficiently to understand human behaviour in particular health behaviour
- Demonstrate awareness in general of the influence of social, psychological, cultural and ennvironmental factors on human behaviour, in particular their impact on oral health and the delivery of oral care
- Understand the theories and methodology relating to communication (verbal and non-verbal) and of the importance of developing inter-personal and listening skills
- Understand techniques for the management of the anxious patient
- Appreciate the relationship between behavioural science and patient management, patient education and successful teamwork
- Actively participate in the oral health promotion programmes.

Syllabus

- The relationship between epidemiological studies in relation to the provision of oral health care.
- Basic statically methodologies and indices used in health care studies and their interpretation.
- Principles of health education and health promotion with holistic approach to promoting health.
- Planning, delivery and evaluating dental health education.
- Rationale and implementation of community based oral health initiatives and the structure of public health services.
- Rationale of preventive dentisry in relation to primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, to include chemical and mechanical plaque control, flouride supplements, fissure sealants and diet advice.
- Aetiology of dental disease, to include dietary effects on dental caries, erosion and periodontal disease.
- Use and application of appropriate indices in relation to caries and periodontal disease.
- Understand the links between diet and nutrition and medically compromised normal and poor health.
- Stages of growth and development especially physical, social, emotional and mental development and it's relevance to health behaviours.
- Sociology and psychology of behaviour and its significance to health promotion to include cultural, religious and environmental influences.
- Effective communication in various settings.
- Definitions of the term "health education" and "health promotion" and the role of the hygienist/therapist within those concepts.
- Planning, provision and evaluation of oral health promotion programmes.
