Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- set up, maintain and work in a clinical area in accordance with current cross infection control and health and safety guidelines
- combine all personal skill to manage the patient effectively to include clinical record keeping, electronic database, confidentiality, data protection, communication etc.
- demonstrate appropriate team work skills and holistic patient care
- understand the importance of thorough recording of a patient's medical history (past and present)
- demonstrate knowledge of medical conditions which might affect the health of members of the dental team. To include the management of patients with special needs (mental, physical, medical and social)
- recognise medical emergencies, understand their cause and know how ro deal effectively with such an event.
- describe the principles of correct operator positions and control of dental instruments
- describe the principles of periodontal and restorative/operative procedures
- describe the design and model of action of individual dental instruments and their use, to include mechanical and non-mechanical types
- demonstrate the ability to identify and select the appropraite equipment, instruments and materials for a particular task and use instruments safely and effectively
- describe the aetiology and features of tooth abnormalities
- describe the aetiology and features of common oral infections and lesions and appreciate their implications and when to seek appropriate advise
- outline the differing features of benign and malignant leions and their significance
- describe the causes, significance and local management of xerostomia
- be aware of the common causes and management of facial and TMJ pain.

Syllabus

- Clinical procedures, maintenance and conduct
- Retrieval, storage and preparation of clinical notes
- Teamwork
- Hospital policies (cross infection, heath and safety, ABC, INR)
- Patient confidentiality/data protection
- Ethic/legal rationale behind recording and understanding medical history and its relevance to the patients health and treatment provided
- Clinical appearance and oral manifestations of systemic disease
- Recognise and deal effectively with emergencies in the clinical situation and carrying out effectvie CPR
- Design function and appropriate use of mechanical and non-mechanical dental instruments to include phantom head practice
- Recognise changes within the oral cavity and common oral lesions (ulcers, white leisons, infections benign and malignant lesions)
- Causes, significance and local management of xerostomia and oro-facial pain
- Management of patients with special needs in difference clinical settings.
